PSAT Profile - Profile of the PSAT

What's Being Tested?: The PSAT now has three component areas: Writing, Critical Reading, and Math.

Test Format: The PSAT is basically a shorter version of the SAT (without the essay). There are two 25-minute Critical Reading sections, two 25-minute Math sections, and one 30-minute Writing Skills section.

Scoring the Test: Students are given a 20-80 score in each of the three areas. These are added together for an overall 60-240 "selection index." Note that these scores correspond to SAT scores of 200 to 800 and 600-2400 (the final "0" in each score is simply eliminated).

PSAT Writing: Using three types of multiple choice questions, the Writing section tests your mastery of grammar, diction, and usage.

PSAT Critical Reading: Many students know of this section as "reading comprehension." Test-takers are asked to read passages of various lengths and answer questions about each passage. This section also includes sentence completion questions, which test logic and vocabulary.

PSAT Math: Among the areas tested on the PSAT Math section are arithmetic, algebra, geometry, functions, and statistics. The Math section is primarily multiple choice, but there are also ten "student produced response" questions.

Given in the Fall Only, and Only Through Your High School: The PSAT is administered in mid or late October at high schools. All juniors and some sophomores take the exam.

PSAT Mostly For Practice and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying: The PSAT is mostly for practice, as your scores are not forwarded to colleges. However, those scoring extremely well on the test as juniors might be eligible for National Merit Scholarships.
