Brody's Guide to the College Admissions Essay

Brody's Guide to the College Admissions Essay is available at bookstores and at online retailers such as Amazon.com. The book was written by a college counselor and writer who has appeared on national television to discuss admissions-related issues, and a dean of law school admissions at a major university. It has been used in high schools and in after-school programs.

For those students who would benefit from professional help with their college admissions essays, we recommend EssayEdge.com, which has been praised by the Washington Post and the New York Times.

III- Writing: Putting your Thoughts on Paper

So you’ve got a topic. You’ve got a computer. You’ve got some time.

What now?

After settling on a topic, every applicant seems to have a different way to get started. Sometimes, students sit in front of a computer for hours, not knowing where to begin. Others work in fitful spurts, churning out an introduction or a conclusion but not much else. Sometimes we see outlines that undergo dozens of revisions. A few times a year, a student leaves our offices and returns the next day with a first draft. Some can’t even get that first sentence written.

Unfortunately, there’s no ideal approach. Writing the college essays is hard, and unless you’ve got everything planned out exactly in your mind, it’s going to take some time to get that ideal 200-500 word essay on paper.

Following are some guidelines that our students have found effective over the years.
