Brody's Guide to the College Admissions Essay
Brody's Guide to the College Admissions Essay is available at bookstores and at online retailers such as Amazon.com . It has been used in high schools and in after-school programs.
For those students who would benefit from professional help with their college admissions essays, we recommend EssayEdge.com, which has been praised by the Washington Post and the New York Times.
VII. Successful Essays
Here we’ve compiled a number of college admissions essays we received from college students and clients. What do the essays have in common? Most notably, they’re good. Without exception, the students writing these essays got into top colleges, and their essays probably helped. Don’t let that intimidate you, though—everyone, regardless of what they’ve accomplished or their writing ability, can benefit from what these essays have to teach.
Why are we including them? We hope that by seeing how these students approached the task, and the diversity of their topics and styles, you’ll understand better what the college essay is all about. After each essay, we discuss it briefly—why we liked it, what it’s best qualities are, and what you as a future essay writer can take away from it.
Most of these essays contain minor errors that we, as full-time admissions counselors, would probably correct. However, because such issues are inevitable among even the best and brightest high school students, we generally focus here on what’s important for you to learn. Think about what you, as a writer, might be able to absorb from these fine examples.
And enjoy.
