We just finished explaining that opening quotations and vulgarity should be avoided. So the fact that we start this short chapter by blatantly violating both rules should get your attention.

Of course Hemingway is exaggerating a little, or at least just expressing his opinion of his own writing. But it’s definitely true that for most writers of any caliber, the first draft of an essay will be substantially worse than the carefully-improved final product.
