Brody's Guide to the College Admissions Essay
Brody's Guide to the College Admissions Essay is available at bookstores and at online retailers such as Amazon.com . The book was written by a college counselor and writer who has appeared on national television to discuss admissions-related issues, and a dean of law school admissions at a major university. It has been used in high schools and in after-school programs.
For those students who would benefit from professional help with their college admissions essays, we recommend EssayEdge.com, which has been praised by the Washington Post and the New York Times.
Other Competitive Schools
What if you’re not applying to a “top” school? Some schools require essays, and read them carefully, but are slightly less competitive than some of the names we’ve already mentioned. This includes a number of smaller schools with strong regional reputations. Most of the above rules still apply. The difference is that, while the profile of the admissions officer is likely still the same (a harried, experienced professional), the pool of competition may be a little less daunting.
This shouldn’t change your strategy at all. You still need to produce stellar work, and take care of all of the other essay essentials we talk about later in this guide. Just be aware that your reader will be less inundated with powerful and perfect student essays. Standing out (for the sake of standing out) will probably be at less of a premium, and demonstrating your writing chops will be crucial.
