Brody's Guide to the College Admissions Essay

Brody's Guide to the College Admissions Essay is available at bookstores and at online retailers such as Amazon.com. The book was written by a college counselor and writer who has appeared on national television to discuss admissions-related issues, and a dean of law school admissions at a major university. It has been used in high schools and in after-school programs.

For those students who would benefit from professional help with their college admissions essays, we recommend EssayEdge.com, which has been praised by the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Less Competitive Schools

Finally, there are some large state schools and local schools that don’t have rigorous admissions requirements but still require an essay. Not surprisingly, the admissions process (and thus your audience) is a little different at those places. Often, an administrator or part-timer will be reading your essay (or sometimes, especially if your grades and test scores are too high or too low, no one will be reading it).

Make sure your essay looks well-written and solid to any person who might look it over. Don’t write anything weird. Don’t write anything too innovative or difficult to understand in a short time period. Write well and clearly, and cleanly answer the questions posed. At these schools, the essay is used more like GPA and SATs than as a way to get to know you. The schools want more information about how well you write and how clearly you express your thoughts.
